Tiger Woods overcame pain in his surgically repaired knee and a feisty veteran to claim his 14th major at the US Open in a nail-biter.
After falling one behind, the top-ranked golfer parred at 16 and 17 and forced a sudden-death playoff when he birdied at 18, clenching his fists in triumph. He sealed the victory the following day with a regulation par at the 19th hole.
With his defeat of Rocco Mediate at Torrey Pines, Woods joins childhood idol Jack Nicklaus as the only players to win each of the four majors three times.
