The award for biggest Olympic drama queen goes to...(PART 3)

Turns out.......the drama queen was RIGHT!

As reported previously, Sweden's Ara Abrahamian put on a dramatic demonstration of poor sportsmanship in Beijing during the 84 kilogram wrestling medals ceremony. Ara took off his bronze medal and dropped it in the middle of the wrestling mat and walked away from the presentation. Later the International Olympic Committee stripped Abrahamian of his bronze medal title for "violating the spirit of fair play during the medal ceremony."

Abrahamian complained to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) that a penalty in the second round of his Olympic match on Aug. 14 against Andrea Minguzzi from Italy was not assessed until after the round ended. This resulted in Abrahamian’s loss placing him in the bronze medal match instead of the gold medal match.

Ara's coach was immediately denied a request for a video review following the match, then the wrestling federation FILA refused to consider a protest. This upset the 28-year-old Abrahamian. He had to be restrained from going after the officials. He stormed away and slammed doors in the dressing rooms in protest. He was talked into wrestling for the bronze medal by fellow competitors and he went on to win the bronze. But then he put on his demonstration of defiance by dropping the medal in disgust and walking away from the medals ceremony.

Now after reviewing the video, Ara has shown the error to officials. He originally wanted the judges tossed out and his medal restored. But in the end, he only wanted CAS to verify that the lack of an immediate appeals process is a loophole that needs to be fixed and he is letting the incident go.

My apologies for calling Ara a drama queen. When an athlete works so hard to compete at such a high level I can't imagine how frustrating it must be when rules are not followed and the outcome of a mistake costs an athlete a medal.

Turns out, I am the drama queen for making a big deal of Ara's behavior and blogging about it. Oops!
