Wishbone: Living Gay in the NFL

Casey Thompson, red-headed, farm-bred, American son, grew up in Wisconsin, back-ended into a starting QB role for Wisconsin State, won the Heisman, and was drafted Number One by the California Condors, where, as a rookie, he took the struggling franchise to the playoffs. Not bad, considering he did all this while living in the closet.

Now, it's year two of Casey's life in the NFL. A year that begins with things not going so well, on and off the field. Things long-repressed are coming to a boil. As the season, and our story, begins, Casey Thompson has bombed in game one, and follows that up with a bad turn at a local bar, as he (doesn't) deal with the heart of his problems: who he is as a gay man.

Follow Casey Thompson through a pivotal season in his life. Pivotal for his career as an NFL quarterback, and pivotal for his career as a human being.

Cast of Characters

Casey “Wishbone” Thompson: 2nd year star QB with the NFL’s Los Angeles team, the California Condors.  Graduated from Wisconsin State University where he was a 3 and ½ year starter, set school and conference records, and one the Heisman his senior year.  Closeted at the beginning of the serial.  Had a great year his 1st year with the Condors, moving them from last place in the NFC West to a playoff birth.   Showed some erratic behavior, both on and off the field.  His nickname is “Wishbone”.

Trish Gillespie: Casey’s agent and close friend from college.  She’s young, a lawyer, and new to sports agency.  She works for a large Sports Agency firm, Rappel & Martin.  She is also the only person in Casey’s professional life that knows he is gay.

Greg Forman: Casey’s roommate from college, and the Wisconsin State QB that Casey replaced during his freshman year, due to football-ending injury suffered by Greg.

Petrius Jackson: Casey’s only “close” friend on the Stars, Petrius is the Condors’ starting Tight End.  Petrius does not know about Casey being gay.  Petrius is funny, a little wild, and smart.

Annie Jackson: Petrius’ wife, and also friends with Casey.  She calls Petrius “Petey”

Randall Commons: Head Coach of the California Condors.  Young for a NFL head coach (think Steelers’ Head Coach).  A big supporter of Casey, he put Casey in the starting job after week 3 of season one, replacing a local legend, Tommy Smith, at QB.  Drew the anger and hate of a lot of fans, which was only quelled by winning and going to the playoffs.  Even though he has the team going in the right direction, a lot of Condors fans don’t like him.

Vincent Elston, III: Owner of the California Condors. Owns a media empire.

James Myers: Sports writer for the Los Angeles Star-Times.

Ginny Simons: Sports writer for the Boston Daily Tribune, ex-WNBA player.

Well, it's off to an interesting start with the characters. Although with all the people that don't know that Wishbone is gay, it will be interesting to see how his social life plays out. I could easily see how this would work in a graphic novel format.
