Spectator Sport: MLB Rookies of the Year, 2008
It’s nice when we can, in life, kill two birds with one stone. And that’s what this post does: alerts our faithful readers with breaking news about two great young talents and, simultaneously, alerts them as to hotness!
In the National League, the Cubs’ Geovany Soto was named NL Rookie of the Year in a run-away vote (31 out of 32 votes). Soto had a phenomenal year for a rookie – especially for an everyday catcher. Hitting .285 with 23 HRs and 86 RBI, Soto didn’t bat like a catcher. Throughout the season, the Cubs batted him high in the line-up to leverage his power and high average. The guy reminds me of a young Pudge Rodriguez.
In the American League, the Rays’ Evan Longoria (no relation to Eva) was named AL Rookie of the Year on a unanimous vote. Longoria, who hit 27 HRs and drove in 85, is an exciting player and a big, big reason that the Tampa Bay Rays went from worst to first in their League and wound up in the World Series.
And, as I said, both guys are worth looking at!

day-um! longoria is straight adorable!
