It’s bowl season, and that means that I get to sit around and watch all manner of college football games, from the sublime to the ridiculous. As a lifelong, and too often long-suffering, Northwestern fan, this year means that I got to spend Monday night watching NU take on Missouri in the Alamo Bowl.
NU should have gone to a bigger/better bowl, a New Year’s Day bowl (not a BCS Bowl, mind you). However, with the bowls rules such as they are, the bowls get to pick teams based not so much on their records and standings, but on their ability to draw fans to the games and generate TV viewing. Hence, under-achieving Iowa got a better bowl than NU.

I hope everyone had a great holiday last week - I sure did. Not only did I get a chance to prepare for the big day but I also gave myself time to reflect on the past year of tennis, blogging, and everything in between.
And now I'm ready for the 2009 season begin - I mean really ready. There are so many story lines waiting to be told...

After last night’s 5-1 pounding of the Philadelphia Flyers, the Hawks are off to their best start in, well, years. So, the question has to be asked: Are the Chicago Blackhawks for real? Will the Hawks not only make the playoffs this year, but also get to – can I even say it? – the Promised Land? A Stanley Cup?
Let me slow my roll here and try and look and what is and is not going on with the Hawks this year.

Last night, the Dallas Cowboys hosted the Baltimore Ravens in the last-ever regular season game held in Texas Stadium. It turns out - due the Ravens 33-24 victory - that unless something seismically unexpected occurs in the next ten days, it will be the last game of any kind ever to be played in Texas Stadium.

Earlier this week, information became public that San Diego Padres outfielder Brian Giles is being sued for 10 million dollars by a former girlfriend based on allegations that he abused her repeatedly over the course of their relationship. Video evidence seems to support at least some of her accusations. Guilty or not, Giles' actions leave yet another black eye on a Padres organization already hitting rock bottom. Does a player have an obligation to his employer and fans to inform them when accusations such as these arise?

A report in the Sun (a U.K. tabloid) hit me today. In it, AC Milan striker Marco Borriello talks about his new teammate David Beckham (currently on loan from Beckham's main team, the LA Galaxy). Borriello discusses his interest - maybe fascination - with, er, uh, certain things about Beckham:
“I must admit I have a dressing room curiosity over Beckham. “I want to see if he is equipped as he is in the Armani underwear adverts.”
