Plaxico Burress: Living Proof of Karma

Plaxico_burress_83870125 Talk about ironic.  After totaling 30 different disciplinary fines over the years from both the Steelers (where he used to play) and the Giants (where he currently plays), after suspension upon suspension, Plaxico Burress has now shot himself in the leg.  It might as well have been the foot.

For some inexplicable reason, Plaxico felt it necessary to be at a nightclub over the weekend with an unregistered gun.  And, for some reason, while in that club, he shot himself in the leg.  Then, it appears, he had his teammate take the gun back to New Jersey so as to get it out of the city.  So, he not only has knocked himself out of the season, he may have knocked his teammate out as well, as his teammate – Antonio Pierce – is going to face some real serious inquiries from the cops, the Giants and the NFL for his role in all of this, too.

While it is my natural inclination to go off big-time on Burress for being a boneheaded thug who feels the need to go to nightclubs during the season carrying loaded, unregistered guns, I am going to refrain for a moment.  There is something really, really sad about this whole thing.  Burress seems hell-bent on flushing his career straight down the crapper.

The NY Giants are finished with him.  He has been a pain in their ass, and they don’t need him.  They crushed the Redskins yesterday and did so without the services of Burress.  Because of Burress’ constant, petulant behavior all season long, the Giants have repeatedly won without Plaxico in the lineup.  So, he’s out of NY.  Perhaps, depending on what the NFL learns about the whole shooting incident, Burress is out of the League as well, at least for a good chunk of next season.

What is with this guy?  What is with athletes who feel this incessant need to pack heat in public?  Who feel the need to act like clowns and thugs at nightclubs?  Who feel the need to slowly and methodically alienate all manner of fan goodwill and, at the same time, all semblances of a long-term star career in the NFL which, I would imagine, was the biggest dream come true in their lives to begin with?

Well, at least they got their guns and their nightclubs.  Sad.

Plaxico does not make sense to me either, how many of us would love to have the financial opportunities this guy has. To top it off, he was my best receiver in Fantasy Football this year and I am in the running for the playoffs and now I am out a receiver. First year ever I have not finished in last place, thanks Burress!

"I'm one of the top wide receivers in professional football, I make millions of dollars per year, I've got a chance for another Super Bowl ring, and I have everything I ever wanted ... I think I'll take this gun with me tonight when I go clubbing! Yeah, that couldn't possibly mess any of this up."Like Colin Cowherd always says: Nothing good ever happens after midnight.
