Sports Pulse: Figure Skating
If you're reading this, chances are you're a sports fan. But with the wide world of sports expanding all the time (and hot athletes to keep track of), we want to know which sport makes your jock itch. Everyday for the next two weeks, we'll be running a different poll asking you to gauge your level of interest: are you an ice skating fanatic or is soccer more your cup of tea? Be a sport and let us know.
Interested in blogging about figure skating?
The ever-broadening definition of what a "sport" is just baffles me. What's next? Olympic Chess? LMAO

Where's the "Bring Michelle Kwan back!" option?

Blog about figure skating?
Eh...um...not really.
I seems to me that the questions asked are not always as interesting as the answers provided - by us the "posters".
I mean - you could throw out a tid-bit about some scandle or a seriously nice ass (male ice skaters appear to possess these often) but in the end (no pun intended)...
We'll be arguing about just where Jimmy Hoffa is buried.
I so swear this is what I live for - in terms of posting stuff on Gay.com.
I'm arrogant so I like to think people pay attention to what I write...
I'm interested so I like to read what people have to say...
I'm Gay so I like to do that here.
Some of the contributors to the articles are very smart people - not easy to understand mind you - but still very very sharp.
So...
As long as you keep these guys around - you can't go wrong in providing us with questions which are always worth answering.

This is a dance competition on ice. Where is the sport in it. A sport is something where you dont get judged on artistic performance. Real sports isnt pretty, having the best performance and still loosing casue it does not look pretty isnt right. There is no sport in figure skating. It is easy to see this is a popularity contest. A sport is something at the end of the day, you have a clear winner on who was faster, jumped higher, have a definate idea on who was best, not judged on well she perfromed better but it asnt pretty in my eyes, so someone who didnt run as fast won. I still can't see how it made it to the olympics. Whats next ballroom dancing on espn.

"Where is the sport in it?" Clearly, you've never watched it that closely. Yes, they get judged on artistic performance, but they also get judged on a technical level - are their jumps and landings coordinated, do they spin the right number of times in the air, etc.? It takes an extreme amount of skill, and people who are quick to dismiss it clearly haven't given it much thought. It might not entail two teams playing off against each other, but there is an undeniable athletic aspect to figure skating. Plus, I'd argue that the artistic aspect of it makes it BETTER than regular sports, because it's not just about who gets the most points, but who can move an audience.

When I was younger I did not have the appreciation for any sport, esp figure skating.
As I've gotten older and take the time to smell the roses, I find figure skating fascinating and beautiful. I can't even stand on ice w/ skates on w/o falling on my butt. Yet what figure skaters do on ice is amazing! They get my respect!

Maybe it has something to do with my gayness because since I was young I have always been interested in any kind of sports that had something in relation to the fine arts and Figuring Skating tops the list when it comes to the most prominent kind of sport under that category.

I have been a huge fan of figure skating since I was young, but have lost interest more and more over the years since Michelle Kwan has stopped competing. The one thing that kept my interest was Stephan Lambiel and he just announced his retirement a couple of months ago...so the sport has a big VOID to feel now.
The skaters are just not that good anymore.

I am a huge fan of figureskating since I saw South Korean prodigy, Yu-Na Kim's performance. I hope everyone see her performance on youtube, especially the Roxanne Tango, World 2007. It's the masterpiece!

I am a huge figure skating fan. Huge! I have dozens if not hundreds of video tapes I've recorded over more than ten years. For the ladies, my all-time favorite is Katarina Witt. Second is Michelle Kwan and third is Sasha Cohen. I know the sport has lost some fire in the last few years, but I still follow it with faith that maybe the sport will get to see just one more legend made, and in case it happens I better not miss a step.

I used to watch it every year and my favorite skater was Alexei Rumanov. But im not that big of a fan anymore.
I saw the big legends in a show 3 years ago. It was amazing

I've never held an appreciation for the sport, but I do admire the ability of these skaters, being that I can't skate worth a shit.(I'm a horrible Canadian:S) I preferred curling, for ice sports. More of a mind game, which is nice.

I skated for many years and I am starting to follow it again. The skaters had gotten so bad in the '90's and first part of 2000's that I had lost all interest.
I wish they would bring figures back to competition. That is how people learn to skate. I fear we will never see another John Curry or Robert Waganhoffer again. Without figures, the skaters simply don't learn and build a fondation on which to hold an edge.

I think the question is whether people feel that figure skating is a masculine sport or not. Maybe in the competitive sense. I personally would not say I'm a professional skater. If I was I would probably be playing Hockey.

If skating's not a sport, then I guess skiing's not either. And I suspect you have to be in way better shape for skating than you do for skiing.
I probably started watching figure skating about the same time I realized I like boys. It's hard not to admire the speed and grace that the best can achieve. When Johnny Weir's on the money he's amazing.
Jeremy Abbott appears to be the new boy in town to beat. Not many male skaters can make it through eight years.
