NFL Offseason Winner: The Bears?!!? Huh?!?!?

Well, conventional wisdom stated, point blank, that the Washington "Deadskins" would, yet again, “win” this season’s NFL off season. For those of you not into off-season junk, “winning" means  you're the team that makes the highest number of off-season gains in trades and acquisitions in an effort to improve your team.  As I've stated above, everyone was sure it would be D.C. yet again, because D.C. throws around money around like it’s, well, Washington D.C.

But, no! This season’s off-season winner is -- TA-DA! -- the Chicago Bears!

How could this be?  How could a perennially conservative, slow-moving and cheap-ass team like the Bears win the off season? Well, with two simple moves: 1) trading Kyle Orton to Denver for snit-thrower extraordinaire Jay Cutler, and 2) signing free-agent OT Orlando Pace.

And all within an hour.

Now, I think that Cutler’s future with the Bears is uncertain, at best.  Exactly who the hell is he going to throw the ball to? Moreover, the Bears don’t exactly have a rich, long tradition in running pass-oriented offenses. Last great Bears QB?  Sid Luckman. That says a lot.

But Pace?  That’s a great move, I gotta admit.  And if you are going to be a pass-happy team, which the arrival of Cutler at least would indicate is the plan for the Bears, you need a monster like Pace to give the QB some protection.

So, the Chicago Bears, in one fell-swoop, have taken the off-season gold medal. And, I get to boo Jay Cutler up close and personal starting this fall.
