Federer and Serena crowned Wimbledon champions
Roger Federer and Serena Williams continued to add more hardware to their Hall of Fame careers after another historic fortnight at Wimbledon.
The Swiss maestro finally surpassed Pete Sampras as the all-time Grand Slam leader after defeating Andy Roddick 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 16-14 to win his sixth Wimby title and 15th major in a 4 hour and 16 minute epic match. The turning point came in the second set tiebreaker when Fed, down 2-6, saved four set points and won the second set over the American. He threw down a career-high 50 aces and only broke A-Rod's serve once: in the last game of the entire match. Fed also regained the top-ranking over Rafael Nadal this week.
ReRe gained revenge over the loss to sister Venus in last year's final earning her third title at the All England Club and 11th Grand Slam championship with the 7-6 (3), 6-2 win. Her serve was the key to the match throwing down 12 aces in the match (and a record 72 aces for the tourney) while also cracking 25 winners to 12 errors. She now holds three out of the four majors including the '08 US Open, '09 Aussie Open, and the Wimbledon championship.
