Are You Ready For Some Football?
I sure am, but the NFL season is still two months away. Even the pre-season’s frustratingly meaningless games are weeks away. In the meantime, our only option is to amuse ourselves by planning our fantasy football teams, right? Wrong! There is football--real, full-contact, smashmouth football--happening all over the country all summer long thanks to the Independent Women’s Football League (www.iwflsports.com) and the Women’s Football Alliance (www.wfafootball.com).
Meanwhile, the WFA is one week into its playoff schedule. On July 25, the West Michigan Mayhem will face off against the Philadelphia Liberty Belles, both 9-0, for bragging rights in the National Conference, and the St. Louis Slam (8-0) will go toe-to-toe with the Jacksonville Dixie Blues (9-0) for the American Conference title. The WFA Championships are scheduled for August 15 in New Orleans, LA.
The IWFL regular season runs from mid-April through mid-June, while the WFA regular season begins in early May and ends in late June. If you’re interested in getting off the couch and onto the field next Spring, keep an eye out for try-outs for teams across the U.S. and into Canada.
