Fabienne Achille: Miami Heat Dancer Turned Doctor

Fabienne Achille Former Miami Heat dancer Fabienne Achille may not have platinum records, number one singles, or a spot on the highest rated show on television like other former NBA dancers but what she has accomplished is much more unexpected and impressive, in my opinion. Instead of falling into every imaginable stereotype that follows team dancers (lacking intelligence, promiscuous, shallow, etc.), Achille is nearing the end of her residency at a hospital in south Florida and plans to become an obstetrician.Yes, you read that right: NBA dancer turned doctor.

In the sports world, I wish more information like this had the light shone on it. I understand that not everyone cares what the Miami Heat dancers are doing after they finish their respective stints with the team, but stories like this (and its counterpart in Florida State football player/Rhodes Scholar Myron Rolle) are enough to keep even the most jaded of sports fans going. Admittedly there are times when I start buying into stereotypes about athletes and those associated with professional sports, but when hearing about Rolle, Achille, and countless other young people who choose to not fall into the same traps that have snared others in their situations, I just have to smile. This is what sports are about, not all the extra stuff that gets endless coverage.

Though this is the first I’ve ever heard of her, I admire Achille’s determination and work ethic, which will surely aid her in this next phase of her life. I wish nothing but the best to this inspirational young woman.

Next time you’re at a game and watching the dancers, don’t make a snide comment. They may end up being the one to deliver your child, fix your teeth, or even save your life.
