Tennis: Weekend Winners
In a battle of all-American ballers, unseeded Robby Ginerpri upset third seed Sam Querrey 6-2, 6-4 in the final at the Indianapolis Tennis Championships. It was Robby's third career title and first since winning here in 2005. He nows leads of the Olympus US Open Series Bonus Challenge after the first week of the North American summer hard-court swing and will move up about 40 spots in the ATP World Tour rankings this week.
Great win for the Georgian born baller whose season was slowed down by appendix surgery earlier this year. I don't think he'll be topping the US Open Series leaderboard once the big boys return to action in Montreal but for now...*cheers*!
Dinara Safina - Potoroz
The world's top baller Dinara Safina inexplicably entered Potoroz, a lower "International" level tourney, instead of taking a break but made the trip to the Slovenian city worth her while. She was made to work by Sara Errani, who served for the match in the decider, but her experience ultimately prevailed edging out the Italian 6-7(5), 6-1, 7-5.
I'm thinking Dinara needed a big confidence boost after being embarrassed in the Roland Garros final by Svetlana Kuznetsova and in the Wimbledon semifinals by Venus Williams. Let's hope she got it and will take the confidence all the way to her first major title in Flushing Meadows.
I know, that didn't sound very convincing. My bad.
