Tennis: Weekend Winners
Sam Querrey - LA
Well it wasn't Marat Safin but Sam Querry can now breathe a sigh of relief. After making the finals of his last two tourneys and losing, the 21-year old made good on his third attempt defeating qualifier Carsten Ball 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 and earning the second ATP World Tour title of his young career. He also now leads the Olympus US Open Series Bonus Challenge leapfrogging over last week's leader and Indy champ Robby Ginepri.
Nikolay Davydenko was in crushing form this week in Umag as the Russian dismantled former top baller Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 6-0 to win back-to-back title for the first time in his career. Last week, Niko scooped up the championship in Hamburg and continued his fine form in the Croatian city without dropping a set all week.Thomaz Bellucci - Gstaad
This Brazilian baller earned the first ATP World Tour title of his career defeating German Andreas Beck 6-4, 7-6 (2) in the Swiss city. He defeated homeboy and top seed Stanislas Wawrinka in the second round.
Marion Bartoli - Stanford
Marion Bartoli gained revenge (well, sorta) over Venus Williams in Stanford. The Frenchie, who lost to the 7-time Grand Slammer in the 2007 Wimbledon final, won her fifth career WTA title knocking out V 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Bart was ahead 6-2, 5-3 before the American's game began clicking and she won the next four games to force a decider. Unfortunately V's errors continued to mount in the third set and she eventually ran out of chances going down after 2 hours and 43 minutes of heavy hitting by both ladies. Bart now leads the Olympus U.S. Open Series Bonus Challenge.
The WTA tour saw its own first time winner when Vera Duchevina beat Lucia Hradecka 6-0, 6-1 in a 41 minute rout. It was the Russian's fourth final and now holds the distinction of losing the least amount of totals games en route to a championship this season with only 16 lost this week.
