Charger fans have heard this before, only this time they're cheering.
The man who threw 36 interceptions in 25 career games was detained at the U.S.-Canada border Wednesday. The former #2 pick in the NFL (behind Peyton Manning) had a warrant out for his arrest, stemming from drug and burglary charges. He had been given a Thursday deadline by the Texas DA to turn himself in, or the bounty hunters would be sent to British Columbia looking for him.

In an ideal world gay athletes would be treated exactly the same as anyone else on their team but all too often we hear just the opposite happening. So it's great to hear an encouraging story like Brian Sims'.
Cyd Zeigler over at Outsports interviewed the former defensive tackle and team captain for the Bloomsburg University football team. In the interview Sims recalls that he never actually came out to his team. "My team came out to me" after the team's quarterback was told of his sexuality by one of his former lovers.

I’ve never been a big SEC fan. I’m a Big Ten guy. So, I have never really paid a lot of attention to the subplots and subtexts of coaches and players and programs down in the SEC. But I have to admit, I will be tuning in to watch the Florida Gators beat the living $!@^&%# out of the Tennessee Volunteers this coming fall.

As the 2008-2009 college football season ends this weekend, four teams (USC, TEXAS, UTAH, and FLORIDA / OKLAHOMA) will lay claim to being the number one team in the nation. Thanks to the controversial Bowl Championship Series (BCS) system, fans once again are left wondering who really is the best team in college football. Without a playoff to determine a TRUE champion, the problems continue to mount as the current system still does not determine a clear cut winner. Utah's crushing of Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and finishing as the ONLY undefeated team in the nation sends a very clear message to the nation, things need to change.....soon!

The San Diego Union-Tribune recently published a commentary which recommended San Diego State University drop its football program. The school and its president were outraged, and now the paper has published select reader responses. Many have questioned the loyalty of the local paper, which begs the question: do major media outlets owe their local universities loyalty in their coverage?

It’s bowl season, and that means that I get to sit around and watch all manner of college football games, from the sublime to the ridiculous. As a lifelong, and too often long-suffering, Northwestern fan, this year means that I got to spend Monday night watching NU take on Missouri in the Alamo Bowl.

However, with the bowls rules such as they are, the bowls get to pick teams based not so much on their records and standings, but on their ability to draw fans to the games and generate TV viewing. Hence, under-achieving Iowa got a better bowl than NU.
